OF EARTH & MEMORY
"I designed this bust with the idea of reflecting peace and calm in its face. I was inspired by the fact that this moment of tranquility always comes after the storm and that in life every wound heals and scars over so we can keep moving forward."
Laura, Artist
Zephie spent several months working with artists from St Augustine's Centre in Halifax to create a series of ceramic busts on the theme of 'Identity'.
None of the participants had ever worked with clay before, but produced incredible work that reflected their personal stories, journeys and inspirations. Many referred to their former lives and coming to the UK as refugees and asylum seekers.
This came out of the research that Zephie undertook as part of her DYCP, in which she was researching how effective clay is as a medium to help people creatively and safely process trauma through its tactile and playful properties.
The result was an exhibition at Everybody Arts, curated by Zephie and accompanied by photography by Nic Chapman. It was kindly funded by the CultureDale Connects Fund.
