BODIES OF WATER
"We are all bodies of water! What we do to water, we do to every body, including ourselves."
Astrida Neimanis, Bodies of Water: Posthuman Feminist Phenomenology
Zephie was commissioned by UP Projects and Anna FC Smith to deliver a series of community workshops and a performance ritual piece in support of the Bodies of Water launch event in September 2025.
To celebrate the installation of Duk Hee's new sculpture Snail on me at Wigan's Haigh Hall, which harvests, filter, and circulates rainwater, Zephie processed clay dug from the site of the sculpture's pond for workshop participants to create small votive offerings that would be given back to the water as a gift of gratitude.
She made clay rattles which were used by participants in a ritual ceremony to close the day. Zephie led a meditation and grounding practice, connecting people to the clay they held in their hands, which is millions of years old. She invited people to consider how water gives and sustains life, followed by a ritual procession around the gardens accompanied by music by Magpahi. The participants laid the votive offerings by the water and were left to naturally degrade and go back to the earth.
